Sometimes you just really need a cupcake.

It’s been raining here for a week. Every day. Rainy rain rain. But today … SUNSHINE! I thought that bore celebrating, so I went on a cupcake quest. I met Carrie who owns Buttercream Dreams in Weyers Cave. And I brought back a box of the most delicious cupcakes (seriously) to share with our friends and customers at the store.

I share this here on the blog because so many times, folks ask us to recommend a baker for their child’s birthday cake. I can tell you now that I wholeheartedly recommend Buttercream Dreams. Be aware that Carrie is very busy, though (because, again, DELICIOUS), so do book your order as far in advance as you can!

American-made toys at Pufferbellies: classic wooden sailboats

OK, I am in love. These wooden sailboats by Tweet Toys in Oregon are completely classic, but with a fantastic modern vibe thanks to the updated fabrics they use for the sails. I’m totally getting one for my adventures this summer! Or maybe just to float around the tub …

Love a Library: our fundraiser for school libraries, May 7-12 2012

Tomorrow marks the start of Children’s Book Week 2012 — and the start of Love a Library, six days of fundraising for local school libraries here at Pufferbellies.

For years we’ve sponsored the Warren H. Drumheller Memorial Book Drive, helping our customers buy new books at a steep discount for their school  libraries. The program was named in memory of my grandfather, and it was always an event that we held dear to our hearts. But it was complicated. The program was great for schools, but it was difficult to explain to our customers. We collected book wish lists from librarians, but that was cumbersome (for us and for them). We held it during the holidays, but it was too busy at the store for us to give it our full attention. So this year, we decided to make a  change.

Love a Library replaces the book drive with what we hope will be a fun and easy way for families to help their school libraries buy new books.  And we’re holding it during the biggest national celebration of books there is: Children’s Book Week.

May 7-12, simply shop at Pufferbellies (either in our store or on our website), and we’ll put 10% of the amount you spend onto a voucher for your school (all schools are eligible; just tell us at the time of your purchase). Then your librarian or teachers can use the voucher to buy books here at the store. They can purchase in-stock books, or we will special order the books they want most.

Get a head start on your holiday shopping; stock up for birthday gifts; even buy gift cards for yourself if you don’t need anything now but you know you’ll need it later! No matter what you buy, 10% of the amount you spend goes to your school. (The only caveat: purchases don’t earn points toward your PufferClub reward account.)

As just about everybody knows, schools around the country are in exceedingly difficult financial straits. The schools here in our community are no different. We know from our librarian friends that their budgets are extremely tight, and we hope this will help.

Why support school libraries in particular when so many school departments are struggling? We know that, in some cases, school libraries are the only access that children have to books. Although it’s hard for some of us who grew up surrounded by books to understand, many homes simply do not have books in them. And we know that access to books is critically important to a child’s future success in school and in life. Putting books  into the hands of children is like giving them a magic key — a key that can unlock doors for their entire lives.

Thanks for your help and support. We’re looking forward to a wonderful week.

Tuesday Crafternoon: Watercolor Flower Gardens

Watercolor Flower Garden

This week at Crafternoon, we made flower gardens using watercolor crayons and watercolor pencils. Even the littlest ones enjoyed putting color on paper and watching it move when they brushed on some water … and, of course, blowing with a straw.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Watercolor paper or “paint” paper (we like Strathmore’s kids’ paint pad — it’s less expensive than watercolor paper but nearly as sturdy)
  • Watercolor crayons
  • Watercolor pencils (optional)
  • Water in a little cup
  • Brushes (a larger one for watering your grass, a finer one for adding details to the flowers)

Step one: Prepare your paper. We used Strathmore watercolor paper cut in half.

Step two: Plant your grass. Scribble hard all along the bottom inch of your paper with whatever colors of watercolor crayon that you’d like your grass to be. Use a lot of color! Most children chose green, but we had plenty of blue grass, yellow grass, brown grass and red grass, too.

Step three: Water your grass. Use a brush to apply big pools of water all over the areas you’ve colored in.

Step four: Make your grass grow. With a straw held close to the surface of the paper, blow hard to move the water up the paper and create your grass and flower stems.

Step five: Add your flowers, and whatever else you’d like (birds, butterflies, sky, sun, etc). We used watercolor crayons and pencils for this as well, and encouraged the children to try different techniques. You can color on the dry areas of the paper then add water with a brush, dip your pencil or crayon in water first and then draw, or paint an area with clear water and then color on top of it. It’s all fun.

Chewbeads are back!

Over the last few weeks, we’d gotten dangerously low on Chewbeads — and that’s not a good place to be when you’re talking about one of the more popular new lines we’ve brought into the store in the last year or so. But never fear; Chewbeads are back in force!

Since we first started stocking them at Pufferbellies last fall, Chewbeads have become one of our most popular baby-shower gifts. Moms love to wear them and babies really love to chew them. They’re dishwasher safe and completely nontoxic, since they’re made from 100% silicon — the same material used for many pacifiers and bottle nipples.  Plus they come in gorgeous colors!

To top it all off, Chewbeads necklaces were recently redesigned with knotted cords to make them less likely to snag in the wearer’s hair. Hooray!

HABA Rainbow Swirl Peg Game

We just unpacked two boxes full of treasures from our friends at HABA. My favorite is this German-made Rainbow Swirl Peg Game. Little ones can mix, match and sort the 16 colorful pegs and 16 corresponding rings on the wooden board. A fabulous gift for preschoolers.
